A female shopper died and six others were injured after a Mitsubishi Montero sports utility vehicle (SUV) slammed into them while rapidly going in reverse in Quiapo, Manila yesterday afternoon.

Police identified the dead woman as Marides Co, a resident of Maharlika in Quezon City, the Manila Bulletin reports. CCTV footage showed that Co entered a store for a few seconds, then left.

Just a few seconds later, she and the six other victims were hit by the SUV when it backed up swiftly in the direction of the store at about 2pm, Radyo Inquirer reports. Co died on the spot after her body got stuck in between the SUV and the store’s steel accordion door.

The driver, named Jose Pableo, said that the SUV suddenly accelerated when he turned on its ignition. Pableo, who traveled all the way from Bataan to shop with his family, has been arrested by the police, Bombo Radyo reports.

Meanwhile, the injured victims were brought to the Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center and Metropolitan Medical Center for treatment.
