Date: Opens July 17, Wednesday
Venue: All major cinemas nationwide

The new live-action The Lion King opens in the Philippines today. While critics and audiences alike have questioned the purpose of remaking the classic Disney animated film, it will undoubtedly still scratch the nostalgia itch for millennials who grew up with the movie.

The Lion King needs no introduction or synopsis. This version directed by Jon Favreau follows the same Hamlet-inspired story about lion cub Simba and his relationship with his father King Mufasa. The realistic CGI felines are voiced by Donald Glover (Simba), Beyoncé Knowles-Carter (Nala), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Scar), and James Earl Jones (Mufasa).

The cast also includes Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen as Timon and Pumbaa, and John Oliver as Zazu.
