Steve Harvey will be hosting the 65th Miss Universe pageant in the Philippines on Jan 30, 2017. So naturally, the Family Feud host will use every opportunity to explain his mix-up during last year’s pageant anew.
While promoting his book Jump: Take the Leap of Faith to Achieve Your Life of Abundance in an episode of the US talk show The Tonight Show with host Jimmy Fallon, Steve described his gaffe as “pure hell.”
“It didn’t happen that quick. It wasn’t that quick. It was four minutes of pure hell,” he said after finding out that he mistakenly announced Colombia’s Ariadna Gutierrez as Miss Universe 2015 instead of the Philippines’ Pia Wurtzbach.
Steve explained: “I read the teleprompter, but the guy in my ear said, ‘Read the next name,’ and the teleprompter just said, ‘And the new 2015 Miss Universe is,’ and the next he said was, ‘Read the next name now, now.’ I said, ‘Miss Colombia.’ Crowd goes crazy. He goes, ‘Great job, Steve.’ I go in the back four minutes later, I hear a lot of words that you can’t say on TV. ‘Explicit, explicit, explicit,’ and then he said, ‘We said the wrong name’.”
He further revealed that the pageant organizers actually wanted to just issue a correction to the media the next day. But Steve said he wanted to correct his error on live teleision.
“I was brought up that way, man, to kind of just face whatever there is, so I went out and dealt with it,” Steve said.
Initially reports say President Rodrigo Duterte was opposed to Steve hosting the Miss Universe pageant in the Philippines.
But Department of Tourism’s Wanda Teo and Shawn McClain, vice president of business development and marketing of Miss Universe, confirmed that Steve will indeed be hosting the pageant on Jan 2017.
In a tweet last Sep, Steve said he “can’t wait” to host the Miss Universe again.
We’re sure all eyes will be on Steve on when reads the winner of the 65th Miss Universe pageant next year.
During his interview with Fallon, Steve said, when asked if he will host the Miss Universe in the Philippines: “Hell yeah. Hell yeah I’m going back.”
