Say “oui” to a French film festival

Date: June 6 to 12 (Wednesday to Tuesday)
Venue: Greenbelt 3 Cinemas, Makati City (June 6 to 12)
Bonifacio High Street Cinemas, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City (June 8 to 12)
UP Town Center Cinemas, Quezon City (June 10 and 11)

Superhero flicks are pretty much dominating Manila’s cinema screens lately. Those of you who are getting tired of that — good news: The French Film Festival is coming around again. Now on its 23rd year, the festival will, starting today, screen 21 French movies at several cinemas in Manila, Davao, and Cebu.

If you’ve got that one friend who thinks that French movies are all of the black and white Jean-Luc Godard variety, then maybe tell that friend: “No. No, they’re not.” Case in point — this year’s line up. There’s something for everyone here.

The festival’s films include the comedy Rock ‘n Roll starring Oscar winner Marion Cotillard, the drama Orpheline (Orphans), and the dystopian sci-fi movie Seuls (Alone).

Date: June 9, Saturday
Venue: Kia Theatre, Araneta Center, Cubao, Quezon City

Fans of OPM (Original Pilipino Music), here’s something for you.

3D, the collab group of acoustic musician Johnoy Danao, contemporary folk artist Bullet Dumas, and Ebe Dancel of the rock band Sugarfree will be having a concert this Saturday.

The combination of their different and distinct genres will also have an added layer, as the Manila String Machine Orchestra will be backing them up.

Titled Iisa (One), the event will be the trio’s first concert together since their pair of shows called Dama in 2016.

Date: June 10, Sunday
Venue: Mall of Asia Arena, Mall of Asia Complex, J.W. Diokno Blvd., Pasay City

After the Harry Styles concert last month,  another former One Direction member will be coming to our shores. Niall Horan, who sang the 2017 hit Slow Hands, will be performing at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday as part of his Flicker World Tour.

Each One Direction member has carved out his own style since going solo. While others have ventured into R&B (Hi, Zayn) and soft rock (Hello, Harry), Horan went for a more laidback style with his folk-pop album Flicker.
