Taking in some local contemporary art

Venue: ARCHIVO 1984, 2241 Chino Roces Ave., Makati City
On Thursday, art enthusiast and newbies alike can check out unseen works by Filipino artist RM De Leon in his solo exhibition titled SEX (unbridled works on papers – from the vaults).
It’ll be in the Archivo 1984 gallery in Makati City and will include De Leon’s “homoerotic” paintings and black and white compositions.
Sing along to another local jukebox musical
Date: Aug. 3 (Friday) – 26 (Sunday)
Venue: Globe Auditorium, Maybank Performing Arts Theater, BGC Arts Center, 26th St. cor. 9th Ave., Bonifacio Global City (BGC), Taguig City
After last month’s premiere of Ang Huling El Bimbo, here’s another jukebox musical based on songs by local music icons.
Eto Na! Musikal nAPO features hits from 70s group the APO Hiking Society. The story is about seven friends who join a songwriting competition during the height of Ferdinand Marcos’ martial law.
Tickets run from PHP1,500 (US$28.29) – PHP3,500 (US$66) and are available at TicketWorld.
Binge on local independent films in the cinema
Date: Aug. 3 (Friday) – 12 (Sunday)
Venue: Cultural Center of the Philippines, Roxas Blvd., Malate, Pasay City; and select Ayala Cinemas
Binge-watching is usually an activity done in the comfort of your home but once a year, Filipinos get to marathon local films during the Cinemalaya Film Festival.
Now on its 14th year, film entries will once agin be screened at the Cultural Center of the Philippines and select Ayala Cinemas.

Fill your shelf with local indie comics

Venue: Bayanihan Center, 8008 Pioneer St., Mandaluyong City
AsiaPOP Comicon just ended but the party isn’t over for comic and graphic novel fans.
Komikon Indieket is happening this weekend, an independent comics market where local artists share and sell their works.
The entrance fee is PHP100 (US$1.89) and tickets are available at Comic Odyssey Robinsons Galleria.

Hone young writers’ talent

Those looking for worthwhile activities for their children can drop by this weekend’s Young Writers’ Hangout, a workshop for kids aged 8-14 years old.
Specially created for budding writers, the event provides a hands-on experience where participants receive feedback and can consult with mentors.
