Screening today, a Golden Globe nomination tomorrow?

The producers of the movie Signal Rock announced on its Facebook account yesterday that the movie was invited to a screening by the Golden Globe Awards, the Hollywood-based award-giving body. This means that the movie, starring Christian Bables, is being considered as a possible nominee under the Globes’ Foreign Language Film category.

Not a single Pinoy film has been nominated for the Globes’ foreign language film category, which makes this screening such a big deal for Signal Rock‘s team as well as local film fans.

Directed by Chito Roño, Signal Rock was inspired by true events. The movie is about Intoy (Bables), a young man who lives in a small village in the town of Biri, Samar. His sister Vicky (Judy Ann Santos) has moved to Finland in order to give their family a better life.

However, she ends up mired in a bitter custody battle against her foreigner ex-husband over their child. Intoy tries to help her win the case, but communicating with her proves difficult when there’s only one place in town where he can get a cellphone signal — on top of a huge rock sitting on the beach’s shore.

The ensemble movie won the Critics’ Choice Award at this year’s Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino and was also submitted as the country’s entry to the 2019 Academy Awards’ Foreign Language Film category.  The Academy won’t announce the nominees for best foreign language film until next year so Signal Rock‘s fans just have to wait a little more.

Or maybe it might end up getting nominated for the Golden Globes? Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
