Runaway Bride: New Uber video draws on dramatic real life inspiration

The latest Uber video is literally a race to the altar, inspired by the real-life Uber story of Lilith Villamor-Mata.

It opens with a scene quite familiar to telenovela-obsessed Pinoys: a church filled with anxious guests, a worried-looking groom – and a missing bride.

Everyone at the wedding starts speculating. Could it be cold feet? Did she change her mind? Or, heaven forbid, has she fled with someone else? (That mysterious man next to her in her bridal car definitely made us think so at first.)

Watch the video below to find out:

The “Runaway Bride” in this case is in the middle of a mad dash to get to her man after someone inadvertently left the key in the compartment of the bridal car at the worst possible time. To feel the hugeness of this woman’s stress, you have to understand that most Pinoy brides spend anywhere from 12 to 24 months preparing for their Big Day. And when something goes wrong… Well, you get the point.

Thankfully, like the proverbial knight in shining armor, Uber comes to the rescue of our damsel in distress. “Arriving now” probably never looked so good on the screen, and Waze probably hardly ever led to “happily ever after.”

For the rest of us, big days don’t always come with white dresses and old churches, and it helps to have somebody making things just a little bit easier for us.

Despite the nature and distance of our respective biyahe, all of us are trying to get somewhere, and by that, we don’t mean just traveling from Point A to Point B. It could be a job interview, a lunch with a long-lost friend, a first date, a first day of school. Or, as in the 2nd video of the #UberSTORIES series inspired by actual social media posts, it could be the first day of the rest of your life with the love of your life.

The short film reminds us that in the bigger scheme of things, we are not alone. The journey gets better with someone lending a helping hand (in Uber’s case, two hands behind the wheel of a clean, well-tended and air-conditioned automobile).

Some trips you will never forget.

And perhaps the most remarkable part of this story is that it happened in real life.
