Whether you’re a true blue Manileño, someone who just moved here, or are just visiting, you’ve probably already noticed that there is never a lack of things to do in Manila. This is Coconuts Manila’s guide to everything you need to check out over the weekend. Peruse it, take note of everything that interests you, and don’t forget to let us know all about it.
We have another long weekend ahead of us! If you don’t have any plans yet, here’s a guide to help you make the most out of it.
Try something new and go to an art exhibition
Date: Nov. 10, Friday
Venue: Archivo 1984 Gallery, Makati City
If you’re looking to change up your Friday night, try going to an art exhibition instead of your usual night cap with friends. Filipino artist R.M. de Leon will be showcasing his work this weekend at the Archivo 1984 Gallery in Chino Roces Ave., Makati.
For those not familiar with his work, de Leon is known for incorporating and deconstructing pop culture images into his pieces, so it’s sure to be interesting even for the uninitiated.
Watch one of your favorite childhood films on stage
Date: Opens Nov. 10, Friday
Venue: Meralco Theater, Pasig City
For a different cultural experience, watch Atlantis Theatrical’s production of Matilda The Musical. The play, based on the children’s novel by Roald Dahl, is about a girl named Matilda who has telekinetic powers and how she deals with problems at home and in school. If you’re a 90s kid, you’re probably familiar with (and love) the book’s 1996 movie adaptation.
Matilda The Musical‘s London West End production won seven Laurence Olivier Awards while its Broadway production won five Tony awards.
It will be staged at the Meralco Theater in Pasig City and tickets are available on TicketWorld.
Fangirl/fanboy over another Korean star
Date: Nov. 11, Saturday
Venue: KIA Theatre, Cubao, Quezon City
Another Korean star is visiting the Philippines. Park Hyung Sik or “Hyungsik” is part of the boy group ZE:A. He’s also known for his roles on TV including the show Strong Woman Do Bong-soon which is currently being aired on local network GMA. Fans will get the chance to meet him this coming Saturday during a fan meeting event at the KIA Theatre.
Watch local and international independent films
Date: Nov. 13 — 21 and Nov. 22 — 28
Venue: Trinoma, Gateway, and Glorietta 4 cinemas; Power Plant Mall cinemas after Nov. 21
If there’s anything you can count on this coming long weekend, it’s that you probably won’t run out of good films to watch in theaters. The Cinema One Originals film festival will be showing nine full-length films in-competition, 13 foreign films, 13 past Cinema One Originals movies, and 8 restored classics for you to choose from.
We suggest you see all nine of the film’s competing this year but also watch out for the film adaptation of Call Me by Your Name, and the special screening of the film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, two films getting some serious Oscar buzz at the moment.
