Mother, beauty queen, and The Amazing Race Asia winner Maggie Wilson just added another notch on her belt when she became the first Filipino woman to finish the Antarctic Ice Marathon in late November. Wilson shared her accomplishment in an Instagram post last week.

“-20 degrees, strong winds and snow. It was a constant battle with my mind and body,” her caption reads.

“I may not be considered a ‘full’ Filipino at times but I stand at the finish holding the Philippine flag as the first Filipina woman to complete a full marathon on Antartica,” the Filipino British Wilson said.

The Antarctic Ice Marathon started in 2005 and is “the world’s most southerly marathon.” Participants from 19 different countries ran the 42.2 km race this year with a temperature of -25 degrees Celsius.

In an interview with fashion magazine Preview, Wilson talked about the unique challenges a marathon in the Antarctic brings.

“And because there were only 55 runners, sometimes you’d find yourself running alone with just the snow and the mountains in the background, with nothing but [the] sound of your shoes crunching the snow with every stride,” she said. “At times, being alone felt serene but when you’re out there in sub-zero temperatures with no one else around for a couple of kilometers, it could really mess with your head.”

Wilson joined the race with her husband, businessman Victor Consunji. In finishing the race, Consunji has now successfully completed a marathon on all seven continents.

Last year, Wilson won the fifth season of The Amazing Race Asia with her partner and fellow beauty pageant titleholder Parul Shah.

In 2007, Wilson was crowned Binibining Pilipinas World (Miss Philippines World) and represented the country in Miss World competition in Sanya, China later that year.
