It turns out that comic conventions aren’t all fun and games. Last night, actress Hayley Atwell released a personal statement on her Instagram account about why she canceled her appearance at the upcoming ComicCon Asia, noticeably missing from the letter, though, are the words “political unrest.”

Atwell’s letter, which was posted with the caption: “My statement. My own words,” seems to be a direct response to a statement released by ComicCon Asia yesterday, saying that the actress will no longer be attending the event because of — and they wrote this in quotes — ‘political unrest in the country.’

According to the event’s post, Atwell had allegedly sent them a message saying that ‘she is not comfortable making the trip.’

The vague explanation and the fact that no national issue has developed in recent days caused some netizens to question the statement. Others wondered what she was talking about while some accused her of politicizing a supposedly fun event.

However, in her statement last night, Atwell clarified that she canceled her appearance due to a scheduling conflict.

“I was looking forward to visiting your beautiful country and meeting you all. Unfortunately, the changes to my work schedule have made it impossible for me to travel so far at this time,” Atwell wrote.

According to ABS-CBN News, Pauline Laping of PSL Entertainment Production, the local company behind the event, said that Atwell emailed them about the cancelation, stating political unrest as her reason, after two weeks of smooth negotiations.

Clearly, something doesn’t add up. Did Atwell change her original reason after negative feedback? Or was political unrest never her reason for canceling in the first place?

And if Atwell never really said that political unrest was her reason for skipping the event, that’s something Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque might want to know. In a message to reporters yesterday, Roque did not miss the chance to defend the administration and throw Atwell some shade at the same time.

He said that the actress was wrong about her perception and said: “Her loss and who’s she?”

ComicCon Asia is happening this Saturday and Sunday at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.
