Worms found floating in curry at popular ‘fresh fish’ restaurant

In a muddy confluence, that brings together last week’s stories of worms inside tinned fish, and unscrupulous Melaka-area hygiene practices, we give you the latest stomach-churning story to make headlines.

A popular restaurant right in the heart of Melaka city has been shut down for a fortnight, following the discovery of worms floating in their asam pedas (fish curry).

State health officials say that they received information on the unsanitary servings on Sunday, July 1, with a patron at the establishment filing a report the following day.

A video of worms floating through what otherwise looks like a respectable fish-head curry began making rounds on social media. The dish is one of the most popular items on the menu, according to locals.

While the restaurant claims to specialize in fresh fish dishes, this is not the establishment’s first health infractions. The owner has been issued three separate notices under the Food Hygiene Regulation act, with fines totaling RM1,500 (US$375) being issued.

Though no specifics were given over the nature of the infractions, conditions such as the storage of wet items, packaging practices and hygiene of kitchen appliances were all found to be lacking in health-code adherence.

Sip your soups with caution, citizens!
