A Sabah woman was sentenced to a day in jail, and fined RM7,000 (US$1,715) after a sessions court found her guilty of feeding her dog 32 sewing needles.

Latifah Hilda Dusin, a vegetable seller from Kinarut, plead guilty to the charge under the Animal Welfare Enactment 2015.

The suspect is believed to have carried out the disturbing actions in an attempt to seek “revenge” on the pup, as it had attacked her young son, and caused severe injuries to the child in January of last year.

One day earlier, the dog attacked Latifah’s daughter, causing only mild injuries.

In retaliation, the suspect fed the dog a piece of bread embedded with 32 sewing needles, telling her oldest daughter of her actions.

Horrified, the daughter alerted the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), who arrested the woman.

A single parent, Latifah appeared before the judge without lawyer, pleading that her low-income job could scarcely put her younger children through school. She argued that if she was jailed, there was no one to look after her children, nor provide the money needed for their studies.

She added it was her first offence, and only done to protect her children.

Newsflash: There are other ways to deal with aggressive ways that stop short of feeding it a needle sandwich.
