What’s the big deal about GrabCar?

Presented by

78% of Malaysians households either own or drive a car, according to a Khazanah Research Institute study last year. Even though the average car emits about 170g of CO2 per kilometer, to not own a car in KL can be quite debilitating. But with the rise of on-demand transport booking applications all over the world such as Lyft, Kuadi and MyTeksi or GrabTaxi, going carless is becoming more viable.

What is GrabCar?

In a nutshell, it’s a car with driver service available via the MyTeksi or GrabTaxi app that connects riders and drivers using mobile GPS capabilities. Similar to other car-hailing apps like Lyft and Uber, GrabCar is aimed at being an alternative mode of transport to owning your own car. To appeal to different passenger needs, the service has two offerings: GrabCar and GrabCar+. GrabCar (Economy) is a wallet-friendly option for your everyday ride whereas GrabCar+ (Premium) provides a more luxurious experience for the more discerning passenger.

What do you need to know before you use?

It’s always good to be transparent upfront, so that’s why GrabCar charges on a fixed fare basis. With the exception of tolls, you only pay exactly what you see even before committing to a booking. Based on the same platform as GrabTaxi, GrabCar capitalizes on the same safety features such as knowing your driver’s details and the “Share My Ride” feature that allows your loved ones to track your rides in real-time for added safety. To top it off, all passengers are insured.

Lastly, has GrabCar reduced its fares recently by 31% to give passengers the most affordable ride in KL.

Why are transport-booking apps becoming more popular?

GrabCar was introduced in May 2014 to cater to unmet demand during peak hours and passengers who wanted a nicer car and more comfortable ride. To encourage new users, GrabCar has many appealing promotional offers such as the promo code 1STGC that gives you RM10 off your first GrabCar ride.
