An attack on two female university students was made all the more shocking when both victims reported that no nearby citizens would come to their aid.

Susmita Asad and Hetal Rajanikant Gajjar were walking home from their jobs at a Bangsar restaurant at 1:30am, when they were stopped at the intersection of Jalan Terasek 3 and Jalan Terasek 6 by a man holding a knife. The suspect had hidden himself behind a parked car, and grabbed Hetal by the neck as the two passed.

Demanding their valuables, The Star reports that the man held a knife to Hetal’s throat and threatened to slit it should they not comply. Terrified, Hetal screamed, and the suspect stabbed her, thankfully missing her neck, but slashing her chin instead.

She managed to escape, running away, and the man then grabbed Susmita, who had nothing. He relented, saying that he would return with friends, and absconded into the night.

The crossing of the two streets is a residential area of the upscale Bangsar neighborhood, just blocks from away from some of the city’s nicer restaurants, bars and whatever you’d like to do while you wait for either one to open. Unfortunately, the women claim that on that night, good Samaritans were few and far between: No one answered their calls for help.

One house told them to go away, another simply told them to go back to their own home. Others opened their doors to see what the commotion was, only to quickly close them and retreat inside, not wanting to involve themselves.

“Finally, someone who knows us let us in. We called for help from that house,” Susmita told the daily.

Their plight was not yet over, trying to call emergency services, the women discovered that the operators could not speak English. Unable to communicate to him what was going on, and seeing that Hema was hemorrhaging blood, Susmita called a Grab car instead.

Arriving on the scene, the driver was able to take both women to a nearby hospital where Hema received 14 stitches. They have since lodged a police report over the incident.
