After tragic accident of 11-year-old girl in Bangsar, MP says DBKL committed to road dividers

An 11-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene yesterday, after the bike she was riding on with her brother was struck by a taxi making an illegal turn. The incident occurred along Jalan Maarof, near the Midvalley ramp, in the upmarket Kuala Lumpur neighborhood of Bangsar, at 7am.

Athierah Batricesya’s 18-year-old brother, Amzar Hazieq Azizi, who was driving the bike at the time of the accident was also injured in the crash, but he is expected to make a full recovery. Both fell on the road; however, his sister’s grievous head injuries, along with wounds to her legs and body, proved catastrophic.

This morning, area MP Fahmi Fadzil was on the scene to ensure better safety for his constituents, and those traveling in the area. DBKL (city hall) visited the site of the accident, along Jalan Maarof, where it intersects with Jalan Tandok, and their engineering team has given him their assurances that a permanent road divider or barrier of sorts will be constructed. Currently, plastic bollards are in place to prevent illegal turns, but motorcyclists are able to weave around them.

Many stretches of Jalan Maarof have had permanent barriers installed along the median, as illegal u-turns along the road were commonplace up until they were brought in a over a year ago.

However, intersections remain an issue, and drivers continue to perform the dangerous illegal turns, as on Facebook user captured this morning.

Another user brought up an issue that we here at Coconuts KL can attest to being 100% accurate: The running of red lights on a pedestrian crossing. The image above shows a green “GO,” yet a car continues to drive through.

Blocking access to illegal turns is certainly a step in the right direction, but a lot more needs to be done to ensure our safety on the road.
