A traffic police officer who had been drinking alcohol was yesterday arrested for driving his car against the flow of traffic in Johor Bahru.

Johor police chief Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said yesterday that the 25-year-old man was driving the vehicle along Jalan Lingkaran Dalam at 12:30am Wednesday. A video captured the Perodua Axia traveling in the middle lane with its emergency lights on and while other cars and motorcycles kept their distance.

Ayob said that the authorities tracked the drunk driver down at a nearby petrol station, where they found that he was a traffic policeman.

“Investigations found that the man was off-duty and driving his personal vehicle upon arrest,” Ayob told reporters. “He is identified as one of Johor Bahru’s traffic policemen. We also found that he was driving under the influence of alcohol.”

Ayob added that the man will be charged in court.

A video of the incident has since been posted to YouTube and showed the driver attempting a U-turn in the middle of the busy road.

If convicted, the cop could be fined and jailed for reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.
