A third suspect in the laundry cat killing that shocked the country has been brought to court to be charged with animal cruelty. K. Ganesh, a contract worker, had his charges read aloud in Tamil. Two men, A. Mohanraj, and S. Satthiya, had previously plead not guilty to the same charge.

All three are alleged to have caused unnecessary suffering to a pregnant cat in a Taman Gombak Ria launderette in the early hours of September 11.

Netizens were outraged when a video of the incident leaked online, showing what the prosecution alleges is the trio loitering inside Queen Self-Service launderette, picking up a pregnant stray cat, putting her inside a dryer, turning it on, and then leaving. The cat was subsequently found dead the next day by a customer.

Local media outlet The Sun reports that K. Ganesh’s lawyer asked for a lowered bail, as he was only a contract worker, poor, and the only person supporting his handicapped father. Bail was set at RM12,000.

Session Court judge Rasyihah Ghazali also lowered the bail on the second suspect Mohanraj to the same amount.

The third suspect in the case, Satthiya, was discharged – though not acquitted – and will now act as a prosecution witness in the case.

If found guilty, they face a maximum sentence of three years in jail, or a fine, or both.
