Students evacuated after chemical spill in TTDI school lab

A group of students at a secondary school in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur were reportedly forced to evacuate after a chemical spill in its laboratory yesterday.

According to a New Straits Times report, 22 students were ordered to leave the building as authorities began a clean up after a bottle of sulphuric acid —  a highly corrosive strong mineral acid — spilled.

City Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Azizan Ismail told the news agency that they received the alert at 4.02pm.

“A team of firemen from Sri Hartamas including the hazardous material (Hazmat) team was dispatched. The team discovered that a bottle of sulfuric acid had broken and spilled,” he was quoted as saying.

School employees and students were advised to consume milk and take a shower, he told the daily.

“We advised the teachers to ensure that the children were taken to the hospital if their condition worsened,” the NST quoted him further.
