Earlier this morning, former prime minister Najib Razak, and former Treasury secretary-general Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah, were taken to court where they were jointly charged with six separate counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT) pertaining to a total of RM6.64 billion (US$1. billion) that is alleged to trace back to the 1MDB scandal.

Hearing the charges read out to them translated into Malay by a court interpreter, each plead not guilty on all counts.

Yesterday, both men appeared calm and composed as they turned themselves in at Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission headquarters. Earlier this week, news began to swirl that Najib was on the hook for even more charges to add to his previous tally of 32.

Today’s charges pertain to the liability that falls on both Najib, as former finance, and Irwan, as former head of the treasury, over allegation of CBT on six transactions (RM1.2 billion, RM655 million, RM220 million, RM1.3 billion, RMB1.96 billion, and RM2 billion).

Prosecutors had asked for bail to be set at RM3 million (US$720,000), and after a short 30 minute break at the former PM’s request, the judge agreed on the sum of RM1 million (US$240,000) each. Half of this must be paid today, with the other half due 10 days from now.
