Lovers of soup, spice, and everything nice – we have some bad news. Put your spoons down. Ok, here it goes:

Twenty-two tom yam eating establishments in Seremban have been shuttered after health authorities spent the better part of yesterday inspecting 50 popular soup restaurants in the town an hour outside of Kuala Lumpur.

Tom yam is a Thai soup containing anything between chicken and seafood, in a spicy, fragrant and balanced broth, that for some reason seems to be SUPER popular is Seremban.

Each has been given 14 days to buck up, clean up, and adhere to hygiene standards after 156 infractions were recorded, with fines totaling RM42,450 (US$10,000) via the Negri Sembilan state Health, Environment, Cooperatives and Consumerism Committee.

Officials reported that nine separate teams of 60 health officers went from location to location between 4pm and 11:30pm in a raid they imaginatively dubbed Ops Tomyam (uh – Operation Tom Yam).

Photos of grime-laden cooking stations and old, leaky fridges were shared via several media outlet, with investigators saying that offenses ranged from incorrect storage temperatures, to rotten food.

From January to March, Negri Sembilan, the state that borders the greater Kuala Lumpur city area, has conducted nearly 1,500 raids across eating establishments, closing 14 over hygiene.

So, yeah. I guess in addition to beaches, we can take tom yam of the list of things we used to love.
