Snopes Malaysia: plastic rice claims to be tested, results made public promises Ministry of Agriculture

Allegedly real rice

In a world of reported fake lettuce, eggs and meat – there is one urban myth that haunts the headlines every holiday season: plastic rice. If ever there was anything to tear apart the very fabric that binds our society, it would be the idea that a plastic rice was circulating the market.

Like a bad pill at a rave, its consumption will give you a panic attack, leave you sweaty, wondering about your personal choices, and ultimately result in a lasting aversion to rice/E/life.

However, the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry is promising transparency on lab tests of recent plastic rice reports. Gotta start from the bottom-up with this transparency and accountability business. What better testament, than with the humble rice grain.

At a buka puasa (breaking fast) event last night, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said there was no reason to hide the results and stern action would be taken if plastic were found. We may accept bleach in our flour, but do NOT mess with our rice.

“We do not want the public to wonder if the rice is made of plastic. We have to be transparent and announce the results of the chemistry tests.” Here, here.

The results are expected to be released within a week. Can we get a Jeremy Kyle-phone in?
