Prime Minister Najib Razak is ‘MO1’, minister confirms in interview

The cat is finally out of the bag.

After months of intense speculation, the ‘MO1’ named in the US Department of Justice’s civil suit against 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) in July is indeed Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Barisan Nasional strategic communications director Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan reportedly confirmed the figure’s identity during an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

In an article titled ‘Who is Malaysian Official 1? Case closed‘ published on its website on Thursday, Abdul Rahman was quoted as saying: “I’ve said it openly. Obviously if you read the documents, it is the Prime Minister.”

However, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department also told the BBC that Najib was not named in the civil suit because he was not involved in the investigation.

“But I have also said, why didn’t the DoJ name him by his proper name? That’s because he is not part of this investigation.

“There have been other people who are named … and the Department of Justice will take this to the courts and the courts will decide,” he was quoted as saying.

In July, the Department of Justice filed a civil suit against 1MDB, seeking to seize assets in the United States that were allegedly obtained using funds misappropriated from the troubled wealth fund.
