New York police have launched a manhunt for a “hate crime” assailant who allegedly attacked a Malaysian immigrant at a train station on Tuesday.
The immigrant was identified as 56-year-old construction worker Teoh Ming Soon, who had been living in the U.S. for about 20 years. Surveillance footage showed that Teoh was walking at the Manhattan station when the attacker suddenly elbowed his face and threw punches, leaving Teoh lying on the ground before walking away.
The incident took place at around 9pm, police said. The suspect had covered his face with a red bandana.
“WANTED for HATE CRIME ASSAULT: Do you know this guy?” @NYPDnews wrote, adding: “On 3/2/21 at approx 8:50 PM, inside of the E Broadway & Rutgers St “F” train subway station in Manhattan, the suspect punched a 56-year-old Asian male, rendering him unconscious. Police offered a US$2,500 reward to anyone who would come forward with further information.
Teoh, who suffered a bruise on his left eye, told reporters yesterday that the motive behind the attack was unclear. He was taken to the hospital following the incident.
“I don’t know why he attacked me. Maybe because I’m Asian?” he said.
