Authorities seized nearly 12,000 pairs of sneakers, football boots and slippers from a Chowkit area mall yesterday in Kuala Lumpur. Reportedly, the shoes were being sold to consumers via social media at markdown prices.

At a press conference, the director of the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry’s Enforcement division told media that the shoes ranged from fake Puma, Converse and Tommy Hilfiger shoes, worth an astounding RM324,110 (US$79,385).

Each shoe cost approximately RM25 (US$6) to make, and were being sold at about RM100 (US$25) a pop – a fraction of the price the legitimate versions are sold for in stores. However, consumers were not made aware that the shoes were counterfeit, and were instead told that they were being sold at bargain-basement prices because the business was online, and did not have the overhead costs that were incurred having a shop lot.

No arrests have been made, with authorities looking for the culprits involved.
