More details have been released on the man that police apprehended in connection with the brutal beating and mugging of a 48-year-old female inside an elevator of the Taman Mutiara MRT station in the Cheras area of Kuala Lumpur.

Police report that the man they have taken in, 26-years-old and living in Cheras, is a member of Gang 08. However, he reportedly acted alone in the February 14 attack.

Testing positive for ecstasy, as well as methamphetamine, he was apprehended at 8:10pm last night, in the midst of shaving his head, trying to disguise himself.

Prior to having beaten and robbed the victim, the suspect also robbed a nearby convenience store. Authorities were able to match CCTV from that incident, with the same suspect who attacked the woman. While at the convenience store, the suspect used a motorbike, and his plate number was visible in store security footage.

Confessing to eight other unsolved cases of robbery, snatch-theft and break-ins in and around the Cheras area, he admitted to have begun his crime spree in 2014. Police believe that he is a “serial criminal,” with four previous drug and gang-related robberies to his name. He had previously worked as an air conditioning technician.

In the raid on his Cheras house, several items of interest were collected, including the alleged t-shirt worn during the robbery, several mobile phones, bank cards, and tools used to for breaking-in.

Police have since extended his remand to seven days – the maximum they can hold him – saying that the crime was of a particularly violent nature, and will be tracking down his accomplices.

Having shocked Malaysians, the clip of the Thursday early morning attack was shared wide on social media, with even a RM10,000 (US$2,450) reward being offered towards the suspect’s arrest. The victim suffered injuries, was treated in hospital, and has since been released.
