Dramatic scenes in Kuala Lumpur’s upscale Bangsar neighborhood over the public holiday long weekend, when a 53-year-old man allegedly died why resisting police arrest after being accused of taking upskirt photos of a restaurant patron.
Late Sunday night, a 35-year-old woman lodged a police report after observing the man in action at a restaurant along Jalan Telawi 4. She alleges that she saw him use his mobile phone’s camera to take photos of another woman who was sat across from him, at a separate table. Upon seeing this, the witness went to the area’s nearby police station, and filed a report.
Police returned to the scene of the alleged crime, and questioned the man:
“When he was confronted, the man denied any wrongdoing. The police officers then asked him to hand over his mobile phone, but he refused. He then tried to escape and ran towards the alley at the back of the restaurant. They gave chase and tried to pin him down, but he became very aggressive,” Brickfields active police chief Superintendent Arifai Tarawe told media.
It was during the fracas between police and the suspect that officers reported that he “suddenly passed out.” Medical officials called to the scene were unable to resuscitate the man.
The Republic of Bangsar, a popular neighborhood news, complaints and grievances Facebook page, chronicled the ensuing events following the altercation, showing a covered body and several officers standing in one of the area’s back alleys where the incident came to an end.
While the case has initially been classified as sudden death, a postmortem is being performed at University Malaya Medical Center for further details.
