Malaysia’s Olympic heroes get hero’s welcome at National Day parade

It was the hero’s welcome they all deserve.

The national Olympic contingent were given a rousing welcome by thousands of Malaysians who gathered at Dataran Merdeka to celebrate National Day on Wednesday.

Clad in their famous black-and-orange Harimau Malaya tracksuits, the Olympians waved to the crowd as their open-top double-decker bus slowly made its way to the heart of the city.

The crowd, who were caught by surprise by the special appearance, was seen cheering on the national heroes and many were seen jostling for the best spots to take photographs.

Among those who took a ride on the bus were divers Pandelela Rinong and Cheong Jun Hoong, cyclist Azizul Hasni Awang and shuttlers Lee Chong Wei, Tan Wee Kiong and Chan Peng Soon.

Malaysian chef-de-mission Tan Sri Mohamed Al Amin Abdul Majid, diver Nur Dhabitah Sabri and other members of the 2016 Olympic squad were also present.

However, badminton men’s doubles player Goh V Shem and mixed double’s player Goh Liu Ying were notably absent from the celebration.

In its best Olympic outing ever, Malaysia brought home four silvers and a bronze from the recently concluded Olympic Games held in Rio De Janeiro.
