Malaysia’s biggest drug bust: Four tons of cocaine and ketamine seized, worth nearly RM700 million

A dark day for anyone stuck in the 80s, or having a love affair with horse tranquilizers: Malaysian police, along with the Customs Department, seized over half a billion’s worth of cocaine and ketamine over the weekend in what is believed to be the country’s largest drug haul, ever.

Over three tons of cocaine and 500 kilos of ketamine were found in the raid, and officials have placed the street value of the drugs at over RM676 million (US$161.6 million).

The bust was made Sunday afternoon, at 4:30pm, at a shop lot at Jalan PPAJ 1/1, in the Pusat Perdangan Alam Jaya are of Selangor, 45 minutes outside of the city center. Four Malaysians were arrested, along with nine foreign nationals.

A quick perusal on Google Maps show that just blocks away was a local police station.

According to reports, officers initially discovered the ketamine haul, with half a ton dispersed between 11 bags. Hours later, two of the suspects took officers to another shop lot, located in the far more urban area in Shah Alam. Here, they were led to three large, compressed bricks of cocaine.

All suspects and drugs were then taken to central police headquarters in Bukit Aman, where officers will continue their investigations into this unprecedented bust. Narcotics trafficking at this level carries a mandatory death penalty upon conviction.

Speaking to local media outlet The Star, Customs director-general Paddy Abd Halim called it the biggest narcotics seizure in Malaysia’s history.

“It is a collaboration between Customs and the police. Our target is to rid the country of the drug menace,” he said.

Police are expected to hold a press conference Friday with more details of the bust.

According to a drugs price index offered up by The Star (thanks?), the street value of one kilo of ketamine sells for about RM60,000 (US$15,000), and a kilo of cocaine will fetch at least RM200,000 (US$50,000).

Hmm… 200K per kg, with a one G bag going for a cool RM500 (we’ve been told)… A kilo has a thousand grams… DAMN THESE DRUG MARGINS, Y’ALL.
