Malaysians share news via WhatsApp more than anyone on planet Earth

Looks like all those news stories being shared across your family’s seven group chats have finally added up: Malaysians access news via WhatsApp more than any other country on Earth.

The Digital News Report 2017, done by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University said that 51% of news consumers in Malaysia find, share and discuss current events via the app every week.

Compare that with just 3% of Americans.

The report added that Malaysians are accessing news mostly via smartphones (65%), followed by desktop computers (45%), and tablets (18%).

Our favorite place for finding news stories? Social media of course, where sharing is caring, and we all have that handful of friends who can’t help but live-blog current events like their life depends on it.

One thing is certain, Malaysian don’t like paying for news. Only 1 in 5 subscribe to paid-for news.

Now, feel free to share this article to your fam chat.
