Malaysians celebrate: We’re number 1! — at New Zealand visa-waiver rejections

Not content with just being number one at overstaying our Australian visas, Malaysians are also in pole position with New Zealand visa waiver rejections, making up over 10% of those refused entry.

Worryingly, we’ve been in the top spot since 2011, according to The Sun.

The Immigration Department of New Zealand reports that this year, more than 1,000 visitors have been rejected from a list of 50 countries that qualify under the visa waiver program.

Officials claim that since the program began, they have rejected 517 Malaysians out of a total 4,877 refusals. The department claims reasons range from lying about communicable diseases, to the most popular: because they were not “genuine visitors.”

We ask you, define “genuine” and define “visitor,” please. Maybe some of us just really want some of that Lord of the Rings fan action. Or to see the beautiful waters of Awaroa Beach, and then come back home, to where we’re not outnumbered by sheep.

Rounding out the top 5 list of rejected passports are travelers from Hong Kong, with 412 refusals, then Australia (336), Great Britain (334), and finally, Taiwan (333).
