Malaysia rises two spots in English proficiency world rankings

Malaysia is still one of the best English-speaking countries in the world, as we moved up two spots from last year in terms of English proficiency.

According to the latest EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) cited by The New Straits Times, Malaysia now ranks 12th out of 72 countries with a score of 60.70, which ranks us second out of 19 Asian countries.

The only Asian country ranked higher than Malaysia? Our neighbours Singapore, of course.

Clinching the 6th spot in the ranking with a score of 63.52, Singapore is the only Asian country to make the top 10 of the list, which is dominated by European countries.

The Philippines clinched the 13th spot (60.33) while India was ranked 22nd (57.30) in the list.

Meanwhile, South Korea was ranked 27th (54.87) while Hong Kong took the 30th spot (54.29).

Oh in case you were wondering, the Netherlands took top spot in this year’s edition.

The EF EPI is an annual list that attempts to rank countries based on the average level of English language skills amongst adults.
