Malacca traders told to provide biodegradable bags to customers or face action

Way to go, Malacca!

Authorities in the state have reminded supermarkets and traders within the Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council’s (MPHTJ) area of jurisdiction to provide biodegradable bags for customers by the end of the month.

Bernama reports, that action would be taken if they failed to do so.

MPHTJ president Mansor Sudin was quoted as saying that business licences could be revoked as a result of non-compliance, along with a compound of RM250.

“We have given them time, especially the owners of hypermarkets under the HTJ municipality, yet there are still those which do not provide the biodegradable plastic bags or paper bags,” Mansor was quoted as saying.

The ruling was enforced by the Malacca state government on June 1.

State Education, Higher Education, Science and Technology, Green Technology and Innovation Committee chairman, Datuk Md Yunos Husin had said in May that stern action would be taken against those who failed to go with the state’s  ‘Melaka Without Plastic Bags’ campaign which began on Jan 1.
