Tragedy struck early this morning when a Bangladeshi worker was killed, along with over 3,000 live chickens, after a lorry carrying them skidded to the roadside and overturned just south of Melaka.

The incident occurred at 4:00am, at km25 on Jalan Bemban-Serkam, killing a 33-year-old man at the scene, and seriously injuring two of his other colleagues.

Of the 3,320 live chickens being transported, only 300 survived the crash.

The driver, who was taking the live-poultry from their factory to a slaughterhouse, sustained only minor injuries in the crash.

The two other workers are currently fighting for their lives at Melaka Hospital. Their safety, and just how three human beings were being transported raises a number of questions regarding the treatment of foreign laborers in the country.

Just last week, two Bangladeshi workers died and a third was injured after a Second World War bomb exploded while they were working at an MRT construction site. The Works Ministry is currently investigating the incident for violations of operating codes the site may have committed.

Police are appealing for any witnesses of the accident to come forward while they investigate pressing charges for reckless driving causing death.
