Firefighters spent more than an hour putting out the blaze that broke out at Keramat Market yesterday, sending thick smoke into the air and shrouding Kuala Lumpur city.
Fifty-eight firemen from four stations were deployed to the scene along Jalan Dato Keramat, where the 46-year-old wet market is. The fire razed about 40 stalls selling a variety of items including food, textile, and home appliances. The flames were extinguished at around 7pm.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was being investigated.
The incident had also led to traffic congestion along the Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway that lasted two hours. Photos and videos of the market going up in flames were widely circulated online.
The last fire that broke out at the market was in 2007, which destroyed more than a dozen shops.
