Jamal Yunos, wanted by police and 48-years-old, will run for Umno Youth leadership

Malaysia’s most ostensibly embarrassing political party member, Jamal Yunos, has taken time from his busy flight from justice to post to his Facebook account yesterday that he would be contesting the Umno Youth chief position in the upcoming party elections.

Jamal is 48 years old, two years away from being officially, half of a century old. He is also currently on the run and wanted by police.

Cue: Mash-up of intro song to 21 Jump Street and theme to The Fugitive.

Former Umno Youth head Khairy Jamaluddin was in his mid-30s when he initially took on the leadership role, and will reportedly be running for one of the party vice-president posts.

For a bit of a wider context, the current youth chief for Mahathir’s Bersatu party is 25-year-old Syed Saddiq, an actual young person.

Cue: You’re Out of Touch by the legendary musical duo Hall & Oats.

Yunos, a man who had previously been most famous for outlandish political stunts including, but not limited to, shirtless shower selfies to protest water shortage, and beer bottle smashing to protest an already cancelled microbrew festival, is better known these days for skipping town on charges related to the beer smashing incident.

Having been arrested by police under this year’s most apt charge of being a “public nuisance” on May 25, he somehow managed to slip through cop surveillance at the very same hospital ward where they initially found him. He was reportedly injured.

Alas, back pain treatment took a proverbial backseat, and Yunos promptly skipped town, emerging days later posting a video to social media that showed him now at an undisclosed palm forest.

Authorities believe he is in Indonesia, and are looking for him after he missed several pre-scheduled attempts to turn himself in.

Yunos faces stiff competition for the Youth chief position, going up against current Umno Youth deputy chief Khairul Azwan Harun (41), former Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki (42), and Bandar Taman Chempaka Umno Youth information chief Syed Rosli Jamalullail Syed Harman (age undetermined, but was once called “the lowest form of creature in Umno. He is the lowest of the low,” by the last Youth chief, which is saying a lot, under current circumstances).

May the best middle-aged man win!
