Liew Wai Keong, a 46-year-old chef from the Ipoh area, approximately three hours outside of the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, pleaded not guilty today to the charge of causing the death of his neighbor.
Liew is accused of killing 63-year-old Goh Guan Cheong, at the Qiong Hai Association Building, between 11am and noon on February 2, having stabbed him during the brawl.
In turn, Goh has been posthumously accused of killing another man in the incident, 83-year-old Chai Ah Kin. His alleged weapon? A particularly sharp spoon, that he used to stab the victim in the chest, leading to the senior citizen’s death.
At one point, authorities detail that Liew’s elderly mother, who was present and who he supports on an RM1,000 (US$250 salary), was strangled by deceased Goh after she tried to calm the situation. It was then that Liew is alleged to have taken action against his neighbor.
While the prosecution has asked for an RM10,000 bail, the defendant’s lawyers have asked for a minimum sum, adding that the suspect has been cooperative, and is the sole breadwinner to support his elderly, single-mother.
Bail was then set at RM6,000 (US$1,500).
Although Goh survived the initial stabbing, he died in hospital two week later.
In total, police report that three men and one woman were involved in the fight, with authorities saying that the incident was a “misunderstanding” between the elderly Chai (spoon-stabbing victim), and Goh (regular stabbing victim).
