Magistrate’s court sentenced a Grab driver to four months prison yesterday, after he plead guilty of biting his wife after she failed to prepare a buka puasa (breaking fast) meal for him in a timely fashion.

On May 30 during the Ramadan fasting period, Mohd Shahrin Mohd Mokhtar became irate that his wife had not yet prepared his post-fast meal, and proceeded to bite, hit and slap her. The victim sustained injuries to her arms, face and stomach.

Ramadan is seen by many Muslims as a time of spiritual reflection, improvement and increased devotion and worship. Observers are expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam.

Fasting begins at dawn and ends at sunset.

While she was not present at the sentencing, Shahrin’s mother was spotted in the public gallery, crying upon hearing his sentence.

Unrepresented in court, he asked the judge for leniency, saying he was remorseful for his actions, and that his job as a ride-hailing driver was the only source of income for his victim/wife and their two-year-old child.

Although prosecutors had asked for a strong sentence, to send a message to domestic abusers, the judge settled on a four-month sentence on a charge that could have seen him get put away for two years.
