You may recall an earlier Coconuts KL tale of the Grab driver who, upon picking her up to take her to the mall, broke the nose of a female, high school passenger.

Maybe, like us, you just filed it to the back of your mind where you keep other unsavory information that you otherwise wish you hadn’t heard (like that they canceled Models Inc after one season, on a cliffhanger).

Presiding Magistrate Salamiah Salleh ordered the driver, M.Thiban, to either pay a RM3,500 (US$800) fine, or serve three months in jail for the assault. He chose to pay the fine.

Thiban plead guilty to physically harmming the 17-year-old girl at Jalan Apartment Sri Anggerik, Jalan Puchong Jaya, in Punchong at 5:00pm, August 12.

The charge potentially carried a maximum of four years of imprisonment; however, the defence attorney plead for leniency saying his client was remorseful, and needed to support his parents.

He also claimed that his client was “provoked” and “could not control his emotions.”

The incident escalated from the passenger asking to use a toll-free route, while the driver insisted that he had to use the Waze route suggested. A verbal exchanged quickly turned violent, with the driver attacking the young girl, and breaking her nose.

Let it be on the record that as a Grab passenger, it is completely normal to tell you driver your preferred route without incident.

Prosecuting lawyer Mary Phoon Keat Mee argued that the driver should have had greater control of his emotions, and to consider the injury that the girl sustained. However, a only fine was meted out.

Awesome to know that the violently unhinged and aggressive only need RM3.5K to run freeeeeee.
