Tan Chee Tean, a former international badminton player for Malaysia, was tragically killed in a road accident over the weekend, south of Brno, Czech Republic.

Only 24 years old, and a doubles specialist, he had just played in the Czech Open on Friday, September 28, and was travelling to nearby Austria with two other players. Antonia Meinke and Jenny Ertl, both Austrian, were seriously injured in the accident, and are under intensive care. Chee Tean is reported to have died on the spot.

Having finished as a runner-up in doubles competitions in the Bangladesh Open, and the Thailand International Challenge, Chee Tean left the national team in February of this year after a six-year stint.

The Star spoke to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), who said that the loss was a huge blow not just to the young player’s family, but also to the badminton fraternity.

“I am extremely sad to learn of the passing of Chee Tean. He was a special young talent, capable of playing in both mixed doubles and men’s doubles,” said BAM president Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria.

Our thoughts go out to his friends and family.
