Former Manchester United player is the new head coach of Penang

Super League team Penang has made a big splash recently – by hiring a former Manchester United player as their new head coach.

Ashley Westwood, a product of the Manchester United academy, was officially announced as the new head coach for the Super League team on Monday.

Penang team manager Zairil Khir Johari told Bernama that the Football Association of Penang (FAP) hopes that Westwood would help inspire the team and lead the club to glory.

“Westwood is a well-respected coach because under his guidance, Bengaluru FC had won several titles, including the I-League, Federation Cup and made it to the AFC Cup quarterfinals for two consecutive years,” Zairil was quoted as saying.

Prior to signing with Penang, the 40-year-old Westwood led Bengaluru FC to its first ever I-League, India’s top-tier football league, title in its debut season.

Westwood was reportedly wanted by several top clubs in Europe, China and Hong Kong, but he decided to ink a two-year deal with Penang.
