Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry confirmed this morning that the teen national, classified as missing following the Christchurch mosque terrorist attack, is dead.
“The Government of Malaysia conveys its heartfelt condolences to the family of Allahyarham Mohammad Haziq bin Mohd Tarmizi. The High Commission of Malaysia will render its assistance to the family in the burial process.”
It went on to detail that Dr Mujahid bin Yusof Rawa, a Minister at the Prime Minister’s Department, will also be flying to Christchurch today, representing the government, and offering support to Malaysians affected by the “tragic incident.”
Earlier in the week, two officials from the teen’s home state of Penang were sent to New Zealand to accompany his mother and brother following the tragic attack. Both state government representatives have since returned to the island.
“The funeral for the late Mohammad Haziq will be held at the Memorial Park Cemetery Bromley after zohor,” one of the representatives told media outlets via text message.
He asked that Malaysians living in the area attend the ceremony, if possible.
Wisma Putra has asked for the public and media to respect the “feelings of the family members” at this time.
The boy’s father, Mohd Tarmizi Shuib, was injured in the attacks, after being shot in the back. He has since had the bullet fragments removed and is reportedly in stable condition in hospital, awake and able to speak
Last week’s massacre left two other Malaysians injured – all three are making “steady progress” in hospital according to reports.
In what Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern called New Zealand’s “darkest day,” 51 individuals lost their lives, and dozens more were injured, after a man opened fire in two mosques in the southern city of Christchurch last Friday morning.
