Five-star hotel ceiling collapse in Kuala Lumpur, one worker injured

Dramatic scenes at the five-star Hilton hotel at KL Sentral occurred early yesterday morning when a large portion of the lounge’s ceiling collapsed.

One worker was injured while technicians conducted maintenance work on the electrical wiring in the hotel lobby’s ceiling.

Fire and Rescue officials report that the injured party is a Bangladeshi national, who fell a reported 12 meters to the ground after the ceiling collapsed from underneath him. He suffered head injuries, and was given first aid at the scene before being taken to Universiti Malaya Medical Center (UMMC) for further treatment.

Hilton Hotel representatives speaking to The Sun have said that the maintenance works were routine, and the contractors that they engaged with were from an approved company. Reports from police state that the men were fixing alarm wiring when the incident occurred.

The area that fell extended over a large portion of the hotel’s lounge area – about 1,500 square feet, and as a result ORO Café, Chambers Bar and the Lobby Lounge will be temporarily closed.

Authorities will now conduct an inquiry as to whether there were any criminal elements or negligence involved in the incident.
