Finally, we know the answer to which ride-hailing app is cheaper in Malaysia: Uber or Grab

When it comes to ride-hailing apps, there are two apps that come to mind: Uber and Grab. But have you ever wondered which one is cheaper?

Well, wonder no more, as this new study reveals which ride-hailing app offers the cheapest fare.

In the battle for the cheapest fare between Malaysia’s two major ride-hailing apps, online shopping aggregator iPrice has determined the winner — and apparently, it’s both.

iPrice’s research compared the costs of transportation between Uber, Grab and local taxis for each country across Southeast Asia.

Pitting data for both short and long rides (5km and 20km respectively), the distance and time costs didn’t include surge pricing and discounted fares for fairer calculation.

In Malaysia, the study found that Grab is the cheaper option for shorter distances (5km) while their biter rivals Uber offers the cheapest fare for long distances (20km).

Uber was found to be the overall winner across the region — it was the cheapest mode of transportation in most Southeast Asian countries, where 20km rides everywhere, except for poor Singapore, cost less than USD8.

Whether you’re going for a short or long ride, Uber’s cheaper in countries like Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, while it’s cheaper if you take Grab in the Philippines and Singapore.

Oh, to nobody’s surprise, regular taxis were found to be the most expensive option in all South East Asian countries.
