Elderly woman allegedly beaten by grandson-in-law after being unable to silence his crying baby

Netizens have been left shocked after images of a 69-year-old old woman seriously assaulted found their way onto the internet, allegedly at the hands of her grand-daughter’s husband. She is claiming he launched the attack after she was unable to stop the couple’s eight-month-old baby from crying.

Melaka-area police say that the elderly victim sustained injuries to her face, including eyes, in the 6am, Monday morning incident. After being treated at the Jasin Hospital, she was referred to the larger regional hospital in Melaka to see an eye specialist; doctors are worried she may lose her eyesight.

A suspect was arrested in nearby Bachang at 11pm the same day. Police say that he tested positive for drugs.

“Initial investigations found that before the incident, the victim’s granddaughter was in the room, and the baby was crying in the living room.

“The suspect then used abusive words and alleged that the victim was not taking care of the baby before hitting her until she fell. Soon after assaulting her, the suspect fled with his wife and child,” said police.

The suspect is described as a 24-year-old unemployed male with a history of drug offences. He had been living with the victim, along with his wife, since the pair married. The victim worked as a cook at a nearby Islamic school, and shared her meager RM250/month (US$60) earnings with the pair.
