Defense Minister reminds public, and former PM, to verify social media claims

Hitting out at allegations lodged at him over the usage of a government helicopter to get to a local by-election nomination event, Defense Minister Mohamad Sabu has one thing to say: Verify your information before you make accusations.

One individual’s propagation of misinformation in particular caught Mat Sabu’s ire, and that man was none other than former prime minister, Najib Razak.

Man, does that guy love Facebook.

The Pekan MP had shared two photos of Mat Sabu, purportedly in the Cameron Highlands, where the by-election vote will take place next week.

Touching on the subject during his appearance on Ruang Bicara, a current events talk show, last night, Mat Sabu had this to say:

“I am surprised that a former prime minister thinks like any ordinary person when he should have checked his facts.

“As a former prime minister, we should have respect for him — but if he is just like any other person, then I think it does not matter. It’s sad to see someone of that status not verifying his information.”

Najib had tried to highlight the new regime’s hypocrisy, citing their constant claims of Barisan Nasional’s usage of government vehicles for election purposes when they too were doing the same.

Only they weren’t.

Mat Sabu went on to point out that the photos were taken from two separate instances: One an official government visit, and the other taken this weekend. The minister went on record to say that he, in fact, made the three-hour drive to Cameron Highlands himself, in his own personal vehicle, and that he also drove back following the nomination.

He’s reminded the public, and former PM, to verify information before making allegations.
