DBKL to conduct checks on food at Ramadan bazaars

Health and sanitation checks will be conducted on Ramadan bazaars in the city, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) said, with hopes that this would reduce the number of food contamination issues at these popular bazaars.

The Star Online quotes DBKL Socio-Economic Development executive director Datuk Mohd Sauffi Muhamad as saying that some 770 food samples would be tested from this week until June 23.

“The operation involves random sampling of food that are at high risk of cross-contamination. The samples will be sent to DBKL Health and Environment Department’s food quality laboratory for microbiological analysis,” he was quoted as saying.

“Consumers too should check on the cleanliness of food, the tools used and the hygiene of food vendors and the surroundings before buying,” he was quoted further.

There are 89 Ramadan bazaars operating throughout the city during the fasting month.

The annual operation, by DBKL and the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Health Department, began in the year 2000.

Food traders found guilty of selling contaminated food would receive a maximum compound of RM2,000.
