Changing ‘sex’ to ‘love’ hasn’t stopped the backlash against play

Earlier this week, we reported that the production of Sex Love in Georgetown City, a play of modern-day polemic relationship vignettes, became the victim of an online backlash due to the racy former title of the play. Unfortunately, certain individuals were still left angered by the play’s content, and took it upon themselves to protest the premier last night in Penang.

A small group of protesters gathered outside the Penang Performing Arts Center last night, demanding that the play cease production, due to it’s racy content. One of the men standing outside was quoted to have said: “This is an obscene performance, and yet they are involving Muslim actors.”

Both last night, and tonight’s, performances of Fa Abdul’s modern-day romance and relationship play have sold out.

Due to the fervent backlash, Fa has decided to file a police report, saying that it was a preemptive measure to protect both herself, and her cast and crew.

She has confirmed that her production’s “skits address social issues that are impacting our society and nation including inter-racial relationships, racism, pedophilia, and infidelity. They are not deviant nor exploitative, instead, they reflect our challenges and cultural idiosyncrasies.”

Protesters from  Jaringan Muslimin Pulau Pinang beg to differ, and despite not having attended the play’s performance, say that the having changed the play’s title from “sex” to “love” — what they were initially protesting — is indicative that the thespians have “something to hide.”
