Building tank bursts, sending waterfall down side, injuring passersby

The water tank in a Kuantan building exploded Sunday afternoon, sending a cascade of water and concrete to the street below. Four passersby were injured, though none seriously.

The commercial building, Teruntum Complex on Jalan Mahkota-Seri Kuantan, housed its tank on the fourth floor. Around 1pm, a loud rumble was heard, shortly followed by the waterfalls, and accompanying concrete that was supporting the tank from inside the building. The initial noise gave those in the area enough warning to start running, and the injured have since been released from hospital.

The Sun reports that the building in question’s water tank had been in use for over 40 years, so yeah, maybe due for a check-up.

It follows another incident in Kuala Lumpur, three months ago at Pangsapuri Cheras Utama apartments, where a tank burst at the top of a 12-story building. Water and slabs of concrete fell to the ground, raising questions on building safety, especially of geriatric water tanks.
