Brace yourselves, folks; super heavy rain is coming!

Dust off your raincoats and prepare your boats, folks; for super heavy rain is coming.

The Malaysian Metrological Department told The Star Online that heavy rains will hit the east coast, with Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu most likely to bear the brunt of the lashing north-east monsoon season.

The north-east monsoon will arrive some time in November, and will most likely last until January next year.

However, the Met Department told the news portal that several states such as Penang, Kedah, Perlis and northern Perak are expected to receive lower than normal rainfall between December and January next year.

Residents in Sarawak can expect a normal rainfall of between 300mm and 450mm until the end of the year while in Sabah, most parts are expected to receive normal rainfall until January 2017.

The Met Department added that the slightly heavier than usual rainfall this year is also due to the effects of La Nina, which reportedly led to unusually heavy rainfall in some parts of the world and severe drought elsewhere.

The effects of the La Nina is expected to last until early next year, the Met Department said.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department chief operations officer Samsol Maarif Saibani told The Star Online in a seperate report that the city may see an increase in flash floods due to heavy rains brought in by the monsoon.

“Kuala Lumpur rarely experiences severe floods but parts of the city can occasionally get flash floods after very heavy rains.

“Some of these areas are low-lying but in other places, there is a danger of flash floods because of a blocked drainage system,” he was quoted as saying.

Samsol added that more than 900 Fire and Rescue Department personnel had been put on standby to help rescue and evacuate flood victims in the city.
