An 11-year-old boy who orchestrated his own kidnapping to demand a ransom from his sister has been arrested.

Serdang police chief assistant Commisioner Megat Mohd Aminuddin Megat Alias told The New Straits Times that the teenager’s 30-year-old sister lodged a police report after her brother failed to return home after meeting his friend last weekend.

Megat told the NST: “On Sunday (May 1), the sister received a phone call from a man, claiming that her brother was kidnapped. The man demanded a ransom of RM40,000, failing which her brother would be sold off.”

“The sister, however could not provide the amount and told the man that she could only give RM20,000.”

The police managed to trace down the boy and the man, believed to be a family member, within 48 hours.

“Further investigation showed that the man and the teenager made up the abduction to flee to Australia,” he added.
